Overview

Four bedroom, detached property situated in small hamlet on the east side of the island of Whalsay, within easy reach of a wide range of amenities. The property has a mainly grassed garden area and enjoys a fine view over the Loch of Huxter to the sea.

General Information

‘Westhaven’ is situated in the small hamlet of Huxter overlooking the Loch of Huxter at the south east corner of the island of Whalsay, just under two miles from the ferry terminal at Symbister, the main settlement on the island and the location of all the main amenities.

Situated off the east coast of mainland Shetland, Whalsay, which measures around 5 miles long by 2 miles wide and has a population of around 1,000, is often referred to as ‘the Bonnie Isle’. The island has some magnificent scenery and the Ward of Clett, the highest point provides superb views of the east coast of Shetland. A 30 minute ro-ro ferry service which runs throughout the day to Laxo / Vidlin, about 20 miles from Lerwick, links the island with mainland Shetland.

Although offering a quieter outer isles location, the island has an excellent range of amenities which are centered around Symbister and include a school, two general stores and a post office, a doctor’s surgery & care centre. There are excellent sporting facilities including a superb leisure centre with heated swimming pool, games hall, fitness suite, squash court & all weather sports field, and Skaw at the north end of the island is home to Britain’s most northerly 18 hole golf course.

Symbister also has a marina and boating club and is home to several of Shetland’s biggest fishing boats.

To reach the property from the ferry, drive around the harbour and up past the shop. At the top of the hill after the shop, follow the road around to the left to Skaw. Take the first junction right to Isbister and continue past the school & leisure centre to a ‘T’-junction and turn left. Follow the road past the Saeter houses and the Loch of Huxter on the right. Just after the loch turn right by the bus stop to Huxter. ‘Westhaven’ is the first house on the right immediately after the cattle grid.
