Directions

From the ferry at Belmont, drive north for about two miles to the junction to the right to Uyeasound. Drive down to the shore and follow the road along the beach. Approximately half way along the beach, take the turning left by the bus stop. ‘Burnside’ is the second of the two white painted houses with the large sunroom.

Local Amenities

Unst, about 12 miles long by 5 miles wide, is Britain’s most northerly populated island, and is accessed via a subsidised 10 minute ro-ro ferry crossing from Gutcher on the neighbouring island of Yell, which is itself connected by a 20 minute ro-ro ferry to mainland Shetland. Both ferries run throughout the day.

Uyeasound itself has a local primary school but the island’s main amenities are situated at Baltasound where there is a Junior High School (primary & secondary schooling to year 4), a superb swimming pool / leisure centre complex, two local shops (one with fuel), post office, garage, hotel & marina.

There are many places of interest on the island, in particular Hermaness National Nature Reserve, Keen of Hamar Reserve, fine beaches at Norwick, Skord & Westing, Muckle Flugga, Muness Castle and the Unst Boat Haven & Heritage Centre.
