General Situation

The site is situated on the island of Burra (population around 800) which is connected to mainland Shetland by fixed links (bridges) via the neighbouring island of Trondra. In fact Burra is usually thought of as being two islands, West Burra and the less populated East Burra, although they are actually linked.

The site is situated at Bridge End in the middle of West Burra, a couple of miles south of the main population centre at Hamnavoe, the location of the island’s amenities. Here you will find a local primary school, shop & post office, marina & public hall. There is a garage with fuel pumps just after the bridge over from Trondra.

Further amenities can be found at Scalloway about 6 miles to the north, where there are several local shops, another school and a swimming pool. Lerwick, just over 11 miles away, is within easy driving distance or buses run from a stop close to the site.

Bridge End also has a marina where there is an outdoor centre which offers self-catering accommodation and a camping area, and is also the base for Sea Kayak Shetland and Shetland Canoe Club.

The island has several fine beaches including Meal beach a couple of miles to the north, and Banna Minn to the south. A traditional thatched cottage at Duncansclett was recently restored for use by the local history group, and featured in the BBC television series, 'Restoration'.

To reach the site drive to Bridge End. Turn right at the war memorial to Papil & Bannaminn, and continue along the road past the telephone box & bus stop to a church on the left. Continue just past the church and take the first turning to the right. Cross the cattle grid and turn first right again into a shared tarred access road leading to a row of detached houses down the right hand side. Site 19 is a short distance along the track on the left.
