The main amenities on the island are situated at Baltasound about four miles from the house, where there is a Junior High School (primary & secondary schooling to year 4), superb leisure centre / swimming pool, two local shops (one with fuel), post office, garage, hotel & marina.
There are many places of interest on Unst, in particular Hermaness National Nature Reserve, Keen of Hamar Reserve, fine beaches at Norwick, Skord & Westing, Muckle Flugga & Muness Castle. The island is connected to mainland Shetland by a regular ro-ro ferry service which runs throughout the day from Belmont (approx. 12 miles), to the neighbouring island of Yell (approx. 10 minute crossing), and from Yell to the mainland (approx. 20 minute crossing).
From the ferry drive northwards to Haroldswick passing through Baltasound. Take the first turning right to Haroldswick and follow the road around the shore and through the village, passing the boat haven and Northern Lights café / gallery on the left. Continue out of the village centre towards the Saxa Vord estate. ‘Leginsgarth’ is the first house on the right just after the 30mph sign and before the turning to Taftens.
